The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil emphasised the crucial role of public relations, especially in the digital age and during global challenges.
He recounted the vital contribution of PR professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, who worked tirelessly alongside health officials to disseminate clear and consistent messages that helped maintain public calm and promote crucial health measures.
In his keynote address during the launching of the Public Relations Practitioners Society of Malaysia (PRactitioners) in a virtual ceremony today (July 16), he said, “The launch of PRactitioners reflects the maturity and ambition of Malaysia’s PR industry,” Fahmi said.
“It aligns perfectly with our government’s vision for a more transparent, responsive, and engaged Malaysia,” he added.
Fahmi highlighted the importance of PR in shaping perceptions and positioning Malaysia as a key player in the global economy. As Malaysia prepares to assume the chairmanship of ASEAN next year, he stressed that PR would be essential in projecting Malaysia’s image as a leader in the region.
“Our nation’s diversity is our strength. Through effective PR, we can showcase our unity and harmony as a model for regional cooperation,” Fahmi noted. “Transparent and proactive communication is vital in building trust among ASEAN member states and facilitating dialogue and collaboration.”
He also emphasised the importance of engaging the domestic audience through effective PR campaigns to educate the public about ASEAN’s significance and Malaysia’s role in it. This, he said, would foster a sense of national pride and unity, galvanizing public support and participation in ASEAN-related activities.
Fahmi concluded by urging the need for a robust crisis communication strategy to address potential challenges, promoting transparency and integrity.
